Does Taking a Class Again Replace Grade
Grade Replacement
- View //Comment out the comments box
Brief SUMMARY
Grade replacement refers to the process of repeating a course for credit. This means that the student takes the class for a 2nd time. Course replacement may exist a way that students try to raise their GPA if they have experienced ane/some low grades in high school. It is up to the local schoolhouse corporation if they allow course replacement and if so, how the class is reflected on the student transcript and how GPA is subsequently calculated.
Primal POINTS
- Whether or not form replacement is immune and how it is listed on a student'due south transcript is a local decision/is upwards to the schoolhouse corporation.
- Before retaking a grade, students should know how this volition touch their transcript and GPA.
- The IDOE provides some guidance on grade replacement. (Encounter "Shared Wisdom" and "Resource" sections below.)
- Students ordinarily retake classes during summer school or in the following schoolhouse year.
- On-line courses may exist available for grade replacement.
SHARED WISDOM
- Q: What is your district policy on retaking courses either due to a failure or to replace a D grade in order to either become an honors diploma or try to get the GPA upward (in order to get the 21st Century Scholarship)? Exercise you delete the low grade altogether? Go along the low grade just don't calculate it into the GPA? Or keep the grade and the GPA calculation while adding the new class/GPA calculation?
- A: We allow students replace whatsoever course at any time. The lower class gets changed to NC for "no credit" and comes off the transcript, and the college grade stays and is factored in.
- A: The erstwhile grade stays on the transcript but information technology is not factored into the GPA.
- A: Keep the sometime grade on the transcript but it gets removed from GPA Calc, course rank etc
- A: We allow a pupil to retake a form one time and information technology has to be the same class (ex. Honors Biology would take to retaking Honors Biology, not regular Biology). We keep the erstwhile form on the transcript only nosotros audit it and accept the credit away and exclude it from the GPA. We then count the new form toward the credits and GPA.
- A: Hither is a link to our policy at Edgewood HS: https://bulldoze.google.com/file/d/0BxiLSz8Vc0rgWnRSUHFJVC13VDA/view
- A: I leave both grades on the transcript. Nosotros drop the lower course for GPA; nonetheless, they highest GPA calculation they can receive for the retake is a 2.0/4.0. Therefore, any course over a C is placed on the transcripts equally the bodily grade, merely figured into the GPA equally a C.
- A: Nosotros keep the old course physically on the transcript, add an (R) next to the original grade, have away the credit. Information technology comes out of the GPA adding. The new form shows the credit earned and factors into the GPA.
- A: We are pretty lenient. Students can retake whatever class that earned a B- or lower. The new grade replaces the old grade and the new form factors into the GPA. For the nearly part students only retake failures or to earn AHD. For how lenient our policy is, we very rarely take retakes for course rank reasons or just to boost the GPA, especially once we show them how piffling their GPA or rank will change when they already had a C or fifty-fifty a B-.
- A: Our corporation allows the re-take, but we keep the original grade on the transcript and in the GPA calculation in an endeavor for the transcript to be a true reflection of a student's bookish history.
- A: We let just 2 class audits for grades below a C.The original grade stays on the transcript and is figured in the GPA. Plus, a student is non allowed to exist pinnacle 20, if they have a class inspect. We leave the old form on the transcript, but assign it 0 credit. That was it isn't counting in the GPA. I call back our original theory was that leaving the former grade on the transcript left some consequence for not taking the form seriously. I would love to run across what results you become dorsum.
- A: At Marion High School students can retake any Core 40 classes that we have online courses for and it is a retake and replaces the GPA value of the grade, because it is considered the same as taking the normal class. The depression course loses its value and is replaced past the college grade just not deleted from the transcript. If it is a DC, or AP nosotros take no online class for these therefore cannot replace it but it could meet the graduation requirements in taking the online course. The depression grade keeps value and the new online form meets the graduation requirement for the AHD or THD. Unless they sit and retake the form in a alive taught course again to replace the class. So the DC and AP classes stay on the GPA unless retaken in live class.
- Retake the same exact course in a PHS classroom setting during the post-obit school year
- Both grades volition remain on the transcript but credit and GPA calculation will be awarded to the most recent grade
- If the class is not retaken the following year, both grades will remain on the transcript and will exist factored into the GPA
- Students retaking to meet pre-requisite grade standards for an upper level course will be evaluated on an individual basis. Both grades will remain on the transcript and be factored into the GPA (???)A: Retaking Courses: Students pursuing and Academic or Technical Honors diploma will exist given the opportunity to retake (audit) a class if they receive a semester grade lower than a C. The pupil must:
- A: Nosotros permit students to retake classes then remove the lower from the historical grades/ gpa. if they are willing to put in the time and likely take classes with underclassmen- then more than power to them! We go along the course and the old grade on the transcript, but zero out the effort (and the credit in the example of a D) so it will not summate in the GPA.
- A: My prior employment includes 25 years working for Indiana University on several campuses primarily in the areas of Admissions, Financial Assistance & Scholarships and Academic Advising. Based on my college teaching experience, I am a proponent that the original attempt with the class should exist reflected on the transcript. IU limits the number of courses that may be retaken.
- Q: How should information technology be recorded if a student fails a course but so retakes information technology and passes? A: This is a local school corporation or schoolhouse governing trunk conclusion.(Encounter Requirements and Guidance for Indiana Loftier School Transcripts, below)
- Q: How would the GPA exist figured if a student fails a grade but then retakes information technology and passes?A: This is a local conclusion. If the grade is noted on the transcript, it should exist factored into the GPA. (See Requirements and Guidance for Indiana High Schoolhouse Transcripts, below)
- From Counselor Talk, November 2017:
Course Retake/Form Replacement
A grade retake/replacement occurs when a student retakes a class that he/she has already taken to hopefully receive a better grade.

The guidance department will review the awarding. The principal shall have the authority to grant final approval for a pupil to retake a class.
The post-obit conditions apply to retaking a class:
-
No online classes volition be accepted in replacement of high school courses used for an Academic Honors Diploma without administrative approval.
-
The form earned (either higher or lower) when the class is retaken volition be placed on the transcript and supersede the original grade in the calculation of the GPA.
-
The grade that is earned in the retake class volition exist used in the calculation of the GPA, merely the new GPA shall return the educatee ineligible for such awards equally valedictorian, salutatorian, or summit ten laurels.
The original grade will remain on the transcript with the credit for that course being transferred to the second form. A student may take advantage of this pick upwardly to ii times in his/her loftier school career.
